Today (Monday, October 22, 2012) is the 15th anniversary of the signing of the first Basin Street Records’ recording contract. It was a contract with Kermit Ruffins to record a pair of records, the first of which was recorded on November 14, 1997 in front of a packed house at Tipitina’s. That recording was later named The Barbecue Swingers Live and was released in February 1998.
Please join Kermit Ruffins and Basin Street Records when we return to the scene of that first recording, Tipitina’s, at 501 Napoleon Ave. in New Orleans, on Friday, November 16th, 2012 to celebrate 15 years and a dozen projects together.
Since that date Basin Street Records has signed a dozen artists and has released nearly 50 projects including 2012 Grammy winner Rebirth of New Orleans by the Rebirth Brass Band. For a complete list of artists, projects, photos and tour dates please click on www.BasinStreetRecords.com
Other spotlight shows in November helping Basin Street Records celebrate 15 years include:
* Rebirth Brass Band opening 8 shows for the Red Hot Chili Peppers Nov 14-26
* Jeremy Davenport at Jazz at the Bistro in St. Louis Nov 23-24

Preservation Hall Jazz Band is thrilled to announce the release of their box set, The Preservation Hall 50th Annversary Collection, today on Legacy Recordings, a division on Sony Music Entertainment. In conjunction with the release, Preservation Hall Jazz Band is sharing their track “In The Evening (When The Sun Goes Down).” This deluxe 4-CD, 58-track collection includes five previously unissued tracks that were recorded at Allen Toussaint’s Sea-Saint Studios over the years: “In The Evening (When The Sun Goes Down)” (1967); “Precious Lord” (1970); “C. C. Rider” (1981); and “I Get The Blues When It Rains” and “Nellie Grey” (both 1986). After Hurricane Katrina ravaged the state-of-the-art studios in 2005, Preservation Hall producer and musician Ben Jaffe (son of original producer, Preservation Hall Jazz Band member and founder Allan Jaffe) was able to recover many of the tapes and restore a portion of the music.
In presenting its comprehensive history, The Preservation Hall 50th Anniversary Collection draws from 19 albums (and one bonus CD) that were recorded and released between 1962 and 2010, on the Atlantic Records, CBS Records, Sony Music, and Preservation Hall Recordings labels. Tracks are sequenced in non-chronological order, so the listener can appreciate the seamless transitions of the music and the musicians’ lineups from decade to decade.
“I get great pleasure,” Ben writes, “out of a song that has been interpreted, reinterpreted and performed for years and is still as fresh and new as the day it was born… That’s something music does… stretch time, overlap traditions, change history… New Orleans Music is meaningful… It is vital and full of life. It can be happy and joyous. It can be sad and mournful. It has no language barrier. It delivers a universal message we, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, carry with us everywhere we travel.”
Today, Rounder Records is also releasing the live recording of their epic January 7th performance at Carnegie Hall, St. Peter and 57th. The album features a variety of special guests from many musical genres including: George Wein, Del McCoury Band, Allen Toussaint, Ed Helms, GIVERS, Steve Earle, Tao Seeger, My Morning Jacket, Trombone Shorty, Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def), King Britt, Blind Boys of Alabama, and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs.
The digital double A-side single,“Limelight” / “Longer Days, Longer Nights” by Belleruche is out 5th November on Tru Thoughts, featuring a brand new remix by rising production talentWalter Ego (Girls Music/Senseless/UTTU)alongside two killer tracks from the London trio’s latest album, ‘Rollerchain’.
“Moody new tune from Belleruche, lovin’ that… it just sounds so good” – LAUREN LAVERNE (BBC 6MUSIC)
“They seem to be getting better and better” –GILLES PETERSON (BBC 6MUSIC)
“A new, more progressive, complex and electronic sound” – 8/10 – DJ MAG
“We like it a lot…quite minimal but very endearing” – STEVE LAMACQ (BBC 6MUSIC)
“Belleruche – a great band with a great singer” – HUEY MORGAN (BBC 6MUSIC)
“An edgier, more aggressive sound… vocals impress” – CLASH
“Eccentric…creative…clever…plenty to appreciate, applaud and enjoy on this album”– BBC MUSIC
“Ohhh, I just love the mix of beats and guitar, and her vocals floating on top.” –NEMONE (BBC 6MUSIC)
“Sublime… Tru Thoughts pioneers are back in the driving seat and on top of their game”– BLUES & SOUL
This is the third single to be lifted from the ‘Rollerchain’ album, Belleruche’s fourth LP which dropped in May, introducing a more minimal, eccentric and edgy electronic element to their soulful, hip hop-tinged music; taking the band’s core elements – vocals (care of Kathrin deBoer), guitar (Ricky Fabulous) and turntables (DJ modest) – to a new level, and garnering critical acclaim along the way. The two previous singles from ‘Rollerchain’ – “Stormbird” and “16 Minutes” – have had around 200,000 YouTube hits and gained heavy radio support, including a BBC 6Music Rebel Playlist win (the band’s second) for “16 Minutes”, amid a spread of airplay from the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huey Morgan, Gilles Peterson and Nemone on 6Music, John Kennedy (XFM), and sessions for The Selector and Monocle 24.
“Limelight” is a gloriously simple, sweet-voiced pop song on which Kathrin deBoer takes centre stage atop a driving beat. By contrast, the AA side, “Longer Days, Longer Nights”, illuminates the more vulnerable and emotional side to deBoer’s lyrics against a darker, languid and lingering sub-bass echoing soundtrack, the suspense ramped up by guitarist Ricky Fabulous’ Wild West-evoking riff, all enticingly winding to a close before the timer hits three minutes. Rising star Walter Ego – recently played by Rob Da Bank and Toddla T on BBC Radio 1, among others – brings a spacey, bassy house attack to album track “Henbane”; and two further remixes, from mysterious underground producers Maurizio F and Lying Teller, twist the album cuts in new dancefloor directions.
